A stock photo of an egg is officially the most liked photo on Instagram

We’re barely two weeks into the new year and if this is anything to go by we are in for a weird year. 15 days into 2019 and we have a new record for the most liked Instagram post. A stock photo of an egg currently has 38.7m likes and 1.7m comments. In comparison the previous record holder was Kylie Jenner with 18.4m likes and 2m comments. Here’s the photo that the egg toppled to be the most liked on Instagram.

The egg had a clear message and one goal only. “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this. #LikeTheEgg #EggSoldiers #EggGang”. If the fact an egg having the most likes on Instagram isn’t shocking enough. The photo was only posted 11 days ago and the Instagram account that posted the picture has 5.3m followers despite only having one photo on it. We still do not know who the owner of this Instagram account is, but they are surely sitting on a gold mine if they decide to sell the account. Unsurprisingly they also have merchandise you can buy for a merely £15 per t-shirt.

Co-founder of Niche and Brat, Darren Lachtman believes the egg account could make up to $250,000 if they ran a single ad to their now 5.3m followers. Whereas Sean Spielberg co-founder of Points North Group, an influencer marketing analytics company thinks it could be closer to a million dollars.

Despite the owner keeping a low profile, Buzzfeed managed to get a few words out of the now infamous egg account.

The bird that gifted the egg is called “Henrietta,” while the egg itself is named “Eugene.” Henrietta, who lives in the British countryside, was prompted to post a photo of Eugene after stumbling upon an article about popular Instagram posts. They saw it as a personal challenge to try and take the top spot and that it was “nothing personal” against Kylie Jenner.

Also if you missed it the account stated on their story that “it doesn’t end here though, we’re only just getting started.” We know their store is now live for only 24 hours but I wonder what else they have planned for us.

It may have taken a while but Kylie Jenner responded to being toppled by an egg yesterday with a video of her cracking an egg on the floor with the caption “Take that little egg.”

Despite how bizarre and funny this is, what does it say about social media in 2019? Likes and comments do not always reflect how good a post is. You can spend hours analysing how to curate the perfect picture, caption, hashtags and when to post and you will not get any where near to what a stock photo of an egg has.

So post what you like and don’t worry about the likes and comments.

I wonder what the egg will come up with in the next few days….

I’ll just leave you with the picture that everyone is talking about.
